Ceiling Paint Calculator

Calculate ceiling paint needed from room dimensions and coat count.
Accounts for standard 400 sq ft per gallon coverage and recommends cans to buy.

Paint Needed

Ceiling Area = Length × Width

Gallons Needed = Ceiling Area / Coverage Rate

This calculator determines how much paint you need to cover your ceiling based on room dimensions. It uses the standard coverage rate of approximately 350 sq ft (32 m2) per gallon for most interior paints.

What the variables mean:

  • Length – the length of your room in feet
  • Width – the width of your room in feet
  • Coverage rate – how many square feet one gallon of paint covers (typically 350 sq ft or 32 m2)

When to use this calculator: Use it before buying ceiling paint to avoid purchasing too much or making extra trips to the store. Ceiling painting is a common DIY task, and knowing the exact amount needed saves money and reduces waste.

Practical example: A room that is 14 ft long and 12 ft wide has a ceiling area of 168 sq ft. At 350 sq ft per gallon, you need about 0.48 gallons – so one gallon is more than enough for a single coat. For two coats, you would need roughly 0.96 gallons, still within a single gallon purchase.

Tips and common mistakes:

  • Ceilings typically need a flat or matte finish paint, which hides imperfections better than glossy paint.
  • Textured ceilings (like popcorn ceilings) absorb more paint – increase your estimate by 20-30%.
  • If painting over a dark color with a lighter shade, plan for at least two coats.
  • Always buy slightly more than calculated to account for uneven surfaces, touch-ups, and roller absorption.
  • Results are shown in both gallons and liters for your convenience.
