Will It Fit Calculator
Check if furniture will fit in your room with proper clearance.
Enter room and furniture dimensions to see if it works before you buy.
Furniture fit checking verifies whether a piece of furniture will physically fit in a room and through doorways, hallways, and stairwells during delivery. Many expensive furniture returns are caused by buyers who only measured the room but not the path to get the furniture there.
Room clearance formula: Available Space = Room Dimension − Existing Furniture − Traffic Clearance
Traffic clearance guidelines:
- Minimum walkway between furniture pieces: 18 inches (45 cm)
- Comfortable walkway: 24–36 inches (60–90 cm)
- Primary walkway (kitchen, main hallway): 36–48 inches (90–120 cm)
- ADA-compliant wheelchair clearance: 36 inches (91 cm) minimum; 60 inches for turns
Diagonal delivery formula (for navigating doorways with large furniture): Max Furniture Diagonal = √(Width² + Height²) — furniture rotated 45° on its side For doorway fit when laying flat: Max Length = √(Door Width² + Ceiling Height²) (tilting through a doorway)
Standard doorway dimensions:
- Interior doors: 32 inches wide × 80 inches tall (typical); 36 inches wide (ADA)
- Exterior/front doors: 36 inches wide × 80 inches tall
- Patio/French doors: 60–72 inches wide
Furniture-to-room ratio recommendations:
- Sofa: should leave at least 18 inches from each adjacent wall
- Coffee table: 12–18 inches from sofa; 18 inches from TV stand
- Dining table: 36–48 inches from walls (to allow chairs to pull out freely)
- Bed: minimum 24 inches clearance on each accessible side; 36 inches preferred
Worked example: 12-foot × 14-foot living room. Placing a sofa (90 inches wide × 36 inches deep) and coffee table (48 inches × 24 inches), plus 36-inch TV stand on opposite wall.
- Total room width (144 inches) − sofa (90 in) = 54 inches remaining
- Traffic path behind sofa to door: 54 in is sufficient (> 36 in required)
- Sofa-to-TV stand distance: 168 in (14 ft depth) − 36 in (sofa) − 18 in (sofa gap) − 12 in (table gap) − 24 in (table) − 12 in (TV stand gap) − 18 in (TV stand) = 48 inches of TV stand depth remaining — adequate with room to spare.
