Volleyball Statistics Overview This page covers the four phases a box score actually records for a player: attacking, serving, digging and blocking. Passer rating is scored on a different scale and needs its own sheet, so it is not here. Volleyball normalises defensive numbers per set rather than per match, because a match can be three sets or five and comparing raw totals across those is meaningless.

Kill Percentage (Kill %) Kill % = (Kills / Total Attacks) × 100 A kill is an attack that directly ends the rally in your favour, either hitting the floor on the opponent’s side or forcing a ball nobody can play. The ladder this page uses: 25% is good, 35% is excellent, and 45% and up is elite. Above 50% is rare enough to lead a conference. Under 18% is where the numbers stop being about arm strength and start being about shot selection.

Attack Efficiency (Hitting Efficiency) Efficiency = (Kills − Errors) / Total Attacks Written as a decimal, so .250 is read as “two fifty”. This is the more complete measure of the two, because kill percentage cannot see the balls you hit into the antenna. A positive number means you score more points than you hand over. Exactly .000 means kills and errors cancel out. Negative means you cost your team points. The ladder this page uses: .200 is good, .300 is excellent, and .350 and up is elite. Season leaders in NCAA Division I sit near .400, and a whole team averaging .250 is having a very good night.

Ace Percentage and Service Error Rate Ace % = (Aces / Total Serves) × 100 Service Error % = (Service Errors / Total Serves) × 100 An ace scores a point outright. A service error hands one over, which is why the two belong on the same screen. Net serve contribution = Ace % − Service Error %, and positive is what you want. Strong servers ace 3 to 8% while keeping errors under 5%. The jump serve is the whole argument here. It raises both numbers at once, and whether the trade pays depends entirely on how well the other team passes.

Digs per Set Digs per Set = Total Digs / Sets Played A dig is a defensive touch that keeps a ball alive after an attack. Liberos are the benchmark: 4 to 7 per set at the collegiate level, with 3 or more still strong for anyone. An outside hitter playing all six rotations often lands between 2 and 4.

Blocks per Set Blocks per Set = Total Blocks / Sets Played A block that ends the rally is the cheapest point in volleyball, since it costs one contact. Middles lead this stat, averaging 1.0 to 2.5 per set in college. Outsides and setters sit well below that, and a libero never blocks at all, so read this number against the position and not against the team. Some scoring systems credit a shared block as 0.5 to each player. Enter whatever your scorer recorded.
