Tablecloth Size Calculator
Calculate the right tablecloth size for your table.
Enter table dimensions, shape, and desired drop length to find the perfect fit.
Tablecloth sizing is determined by the table dimensions plus the desired overhang (drop) on all sides. Getting this right is the difference between an elegant setting and a cloth that either bunches on the floor or barely covers the edges.
Tablecloth size formula:
Cloth Length = Table Length + (2 × Drop)
Cloth Width = Table Width + (2 × Drop)
For round tables:
Cloth Diameter = Table Diameter + (2 × Drop)
Standard drop lengths by occasion:
| Occasion | Drop Length |
|---|---|
| Casual dining / everyday | 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) |
| Formal dining | 10–12 inches (25–30 cm) |
| Buffet / display table | 15–18 inches (38–45 cm) |
| Full floor-length (elegant events) | 28–30 inches (71–76 cm) |
Worked example — rectangular table:
Table: 72 inches long × 36 inches wide. Desired drop: 10 inches (formal dinner).
Cloth Length = 72 + (2 × 10) = 72 + 20 = 92 inches
Cloth Width = 36 + (2 × 10) = 36 + 20 = 56 inches
Order a 92 × 56 inch tablecloth — the next standard size up would be 90 × 60 inches (close enough, with 9-inch drop on length and 12-inch drop on width).
Common table sizes reference:
- 4-person dining table: typically 36 × 48 inches
- 6-person dining table: typically 36 × 72 inches
- 8-person dining table: typically 42 × 96 inches
- 60-inch round: seats 6–8 people
Fabric shrinkage tip: Pre-wash cotton and linen tablecloths before sizing — they can shrink 3–5% in the first wash. Always buy slightly larger than calculated to account for shrinkage.
